Dr. Julie Seymour, DC, just loves taking care of kids. Here's what she has to say about it. Q: Why is taking care of kids so much fun for you? A: I've just always loved kids--especially the little tiny ones. Plus it's so exciting to see how quickly they get better with really gentle adjustments. They have these beautiful, fresh little nervous systems that make them respond really quickly when the right things are done for them. Q: What kinds of problems cause parents to bring their kids to you? A: The most common things are ear infections, colic, frequent colds & flus, and pain. Parents know when their kids are having trouble--they don't sleep well, or they're fussy, or they're tired all the time. But they don't necessarily know that they're in pain. The younger kids can't really say, "Mom, I'm tired all the time because I have headaches." But often chiropractic can relieve the pain, and the kids stop having those problems. Q: Have you ever treated more serious conditions? A: Well, yes. And sometimes things that look very serious turn out to be not that complicated. For instance, I treated a three month old boy last year with a medical diagnosis of "failure to thrive" (a very serious diagnosis). And the truth is--I didn't really have to work that hard on him. He responded very quickly with a few adjustments, started gaining weight, and he was fine in a short time. That couldn't be the only reason for not thriving, but it was in his case. Q: How did you get started treating kids? A: Any Doctor of Chiropractic is qualified to treat children, but there's not THAT much exposure to pediatrics in chiropractic school. I took post graduate study in pediatrics a few years after I graduated. It was a slow process, but after I wrote up a case study on childhood migraine and presented it at the International Conference of Chiropractic Pediatrics in Dallas in 1993, the Rocky Mountain News wrote a story about me. That's when I started seeing more kids in my practice. That article is on our website. Q: How do families hear about you? A: Mostly from referrals of patients I've seen before, other doctors (chiropractors and medical pediatricians), and from our acupuncturist at the Washington Park Wellness Center--Kurt Breitenstein. Q: Why do you think the parents trust you to work on their kids? A: (Laughing) Because it's so obvious that I love the kids so much. I was meant to work with kids. If you truly have a passion for it, parents see it, and it helps convince a parent that's a little hesitant. Q: Do the parents sometimes become patients themselves? A: Well, yes, sometimes. Because it's such a huge trust issue to let me take care of their kids. Knowing that I could help them, too, is a very easy leap. Q: What's the most rewarding part of this work for you? A: Seeing the kids get better, of course. But it's also very rewarding to experience the relief that the parents express when the kids get better. It helps the whole family. |
